Clouse, Jan Clouse, Paulina Conn, Peter Conn, John Devereaux, Leslie Edgerton, Jane Fehrenbacher, Gerry Gabowitz, Larry Gleeson, Bob Handy, Martha Hassenplug, Sally Hearon, Stephanie Johnstone, Kathy McGuire, Charlotte MacMillan, Jim MacMillan, Lesley Masuda, Nancy Miller, Nancy Murdock, Chris Nelson, Dave Novis, Antonia Robertson, Cheryl Rogers, Sharon Siegel, Tim Steele, Gail Teton-Landis, and Hap Ziegler.

Just part of the work crew that put out a mass mailing for Salud Carbajal for Congress.

Opportunities for Action

Staffing the DSC “Welcome Desk”

As we have done in the past two congressional campaigns for Rep. Lois Capps, the Democratic Service Club is looking for a number of dependable volunteers willing to cover a regular weekly time slot at our Welcome Desk at the front of the Carbajal for Congress campaign HQ at 1226 State St. We would like to provide a reliable presence for volunteer and visitor reception, various clerical duties, campaign date entry, and whatever else is needed on a daily basis, Monday thru Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Time slots can be shared or alternated by friends, and we always accommodate special needs as they arise.
Please look over the schedule below, and if you can help, email us atdemocraticserviceclub@gmail.com with questions or a request. We can remake the schedule as needed throughout the campaign, so no one is obligated for longer than they’d wish.

DSC Mobilizes Voter Reg. at SBCC
Our core mission of voter registration this spring is again focused on SBCC. We have scheduled a wide array of dates for tabling on campus. Please look over the open choices below and let Jim MacMillan know which slots you would like to fill. Something new this year–in recognition of the challenges of parking on campus, we can, if you’d like, arrange rides to SBCC for volunteers.

Big News

End-of-Life Option Available in June
With the close of the California legislature’s special session on healthcare, the End-of-Life Option Act, signed last October by Gov. Jerry Brown, will go into effect in 91 days on June 9. At that time terminally ill Californians will have the option of requesting a medical prescription to end their unbearable suffering with dignity and according to their own wishes.
With this legislative success, the advocacy group Compassion & Choices is providing technical assistance to medical centers, hospice facilities, and non-profit organizations to ensure Californians statewide understand that medical aid in dying is a legitimate, accessible end-of-life care option.
California residents, physicians, and pharmacists can call Compassion & Choices’ free hotline, 1-800-893-4548, for information on the new law. Compassion & Choices also announced the launch of its National Speakers Bureau to place a range of medical leaders and experts at conferences, lecture series, medical and law schools nationwide.

Annual Volunteer Activation Party & Members Meeting

Mark your calendars in blue. And let’s get ready to spring into action when the call comes.

The DSC’s annual meeting and volunteer gathering is planned for

Sunday, March 13, 2 – 4 p.m. at the Cathedral Oaks Village Association clubhouse in Goleta, the same site as our past three memorable celebrations of volunteer activity. There is no charge, and the mix of club members, candidates and office holders is always worth turning out for. Invitations and details coming in February.

Our New Fantastically Updated Website

WELCOME

This website is a work in progress but we certainly hope you will like and enjoy our efforts here. After all, this is Website-Construction1-300x169really for your edification and illumination about who we are, where we are and what we do.

We really hope that we can motivate you to come to one of our monthly meetings – no obligation whatsoever but, of course ,we will try to interest you in our club membership. We have a lot of fun while we educate and inform the citizens of Santa Barbara. No, you do not have to live here in order to join.

State and County Party Endorsements

County Party Makes Endorsements
The Santa Barbara County Democratic party has already interviewed candidates and made its endorsements in several local races. Das Williamsand Joan Hartmann have the party’s backing for the 1st and 3rd District seats respectively on the County Board of Supervisors. Either of those races could be decided in the June Primary.
Also endorsed so far are Lauren Hanson, Bill Rosen and Rick Merrifield for the Goleta Water District Board of Directors.
California Democratic Party Pre-Endorsement Nods
Races for the U.S. Congress and state Senate and Assembly got the attention of the California Democratic Party this weekend at Pre-Endorsement conferences held throughout the state. Salud Carbajal (CD24) and Monique Limón (AD37) each received sufficient Pre-Endorsement support from voting delegates at the Region 10 conference yesterday in Ventura to have their names given fast-track status at the state Democratic convention to be heldFeb. 2628, in San Jose.

While Limón’s race was uncontested, Carbajal won 83% of the votes, easily surpassing the 70% threshold required to put his party endorsement on the convention’s consent agenda. Pre-endorsement for Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson(SD19), an unopposed incumbent, was automatic.

Democratic Party-endorsed candidates in the primary are voted through to the general election nearly 100% of the time, and it’s a big part of why Democrats have been able to win every statewide elected office in 2012 and 2014.
