Congresswoman Lois Capps
(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) –Lois Capps to be honored at a fundraising event benefitting New Beginnings Counseling Center on Sunday, July 17th, 2016 from 3 to 5 pm at El Paseo Restaurant. Guests will enjoy delicious Mexican food and drinks, musical entertainment, and engaging speakers.
Lois Capps, a congresswoman who’s been repeatedly voted the “Nicest House member” in Washingtonian magazine by both sides of the aisle, has resided in Santa Barbara since 1963. In 1990, she received her M.A. in Education from UCSB and taught Early Childhood Education at SBCC for 10 years. In 1998 Lois won her first election to the House of Representatives, filling the seat formerly occupied by her late husband Walter Capps, a politician and Religious Studies professor at UCSB.
Lois has served in the House of Representatives for the past 18 years, and will be retiring this year from public service. During her time in the House, she used her background in healthcare to push forward legislation and amendments related to health as well as other categories. She has sponsored or co-sponsored over 220 bills that have made it into law, founded the Congressional Nursing Caucus and the School Health and Safety Caucus, and currently serves on both the Natural Resources and Energy and Commerce committees.
Diane Pannkuk, Board President, shares that “Lois has been a fixture of support in this community for many years. She has always been dedicated to improving the health and wellness of disadvantaged individuals. We are so pleased to be able to honor her and her service to our community.”
