Voter Registration Outreach

The DSC is Signing Up Voters on State Street

The DSC’s fall voter registration effort, usually centered on the now-dormant SBCC campus, has shifted focus this time to finding potential voters where they are likely to be. We’ve scheduled a dozen afternoons of tabling on the 600 block of State St., most coinciding with Tuesday Farmers’ Markets and a few Saturdays as well.

photo of people registering to vote

James Vallaro (left) and Jim MacMillan make it easy to register near the State St. Farmers’ Market last Tuesday.

With safety and sanitation a major concern, we are following a rigorous protocol, including strict use of facemasks, respect for social distancing, bleach wipes for all surfaces, separate containers for clean and used pens, and a plexiglass shield (so clean it seems to disappear!) between volunteers and registrants.

Our voter reg. specialists Jim and Charlotte MacMillan and a committee made up of Sally Hearon, Leslie Edgerton, and Chris Nelson have put together a schedule of 2-hour shifts, two volunteers per shift, on August 18 & 25, Sept. 1, 5, 8, 22, & 29, and Oct. 3, 6, 10, 13 & 17. Thanks to our amazing group of volunteers who are taking on this crucial job: Jane Carey, Carolyn Chaney, Gail Eison, Jane Fehrenbacher, Mike Hackett, Chandos & Anton Hoffman, Kathy & John Houlihan, Laural Miller, Mahil Senathirajah, Blanche Tobin, Jim Vollaro.

Important Information for Voters
In preparation for our registration outreach, we consulted with the County Elections Office, which under guidance from the California Secretary of State is developing a new model for elections this year as well as outreach strategies.

We found out the following:

Santa Barbara is adopting a hybrid model for voting.

There will be 25 vote centers (polling stations) instead of the usual 86.

  • There will be 2 or 3 drive-up vote centers for reduced personal contact.
  • Vote centers will be open Saturday Oct. 31 thru Tuesday Nov. 3.
  • Everyone will receive an absentee ballot and also be assigned a vote center location.
  • If someone shows up at the wrong vote center, they will be encouraged to
go to the correct place, but can also vote a provisional ballot.
  • There will be 33 ballot drop boxes distributed across the county. One box planned for every 15,000 people.
  • A state task force is requesting all counties put out press releases informing people to re-register if they’ve moved, along with other election information.
  • There will be a picture of the ballot in the information guide.
  • Elections Office will be contacting students through their college’s websites.

Dawn Addis Event with Assembly Speaker, State Senator
The chances of flipping the CA Assembly seat just to the north in Santa Barbara and SLO counties are very strong this year. The Democratic candidate, Morro Bay City Councilwoman Dawn Addis, is out-raising the incumbent Republican, getting lots of media attention, and has the support of many local and statewide officials and groups.
On Thursday, Sept. 3, 5:30-6:30 p.m., she will be joined by California State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and State Senator Connie Leyva for a virtual event in support of her candidacy. The Speaker will give updates on his work in the state legislature and both he and Dawn will hold a Q&A for guests attending the call.
Or if you’d like to know more about the Dawn or her campaign visit dawnaddis.org.

The Slate

Endorsed by Santa Barbara County Democrats

In addition to national Democratic headliners Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the voters of Santa Barbara County will face a ballot full of strong Democratic candidates to choose from depending on the jurisdictions they live in. Beyond our Member of Congress and candidates for the state legislature, which are all endorsed by the California Democratic Party as a whole, the job of endorsing candidates for all other offices–mayors, city councils, school boards, water districts, community college boards–falls to the county Democratic Central Committee.
That’s over thirty careful choices, including ballot measures, that the Central Committee has been working on for months to recommend to local voters. For the whole Democratic slate visit the party’s 2020 endorsements web page.

Help Win Back CA-25 for Christy Smith, virtual phone bank, Sunday, July 26, 2 p.m. — and Petition to Support Local Ag Workers

DSC volunteers wrote 600 postcards for Christy Smith in the May 12 Special Election in this crucial L.A. County congressional district. We came up short, but now as we head toward November and filling the seat for a full-term, we can help again with a virtual phone bank, Sunday, July 26, 2 p.m.
In 2018 Democrats flipped blue seven House districts in California, including CD-25 — an awesome feat! But as Rep. Karen Bass said shortly after this historic win, “We’re only renting these seats,” and we need to fight hard in 2020 to defend them. Join activists all around SoCal in calling voters in this district to talk about how Christy Smith is ready to hit the ground running once elected and her many accomplishments as an Assembly Member.
Sign up here, and you’ll receive a link to join a Zoom meeting, where you’ll receive training on the Virtual Phone Bank and all the info you’ll need to make calls for Christy.
More Direct Action
Sign a Petition to Support Local Agricultural Workers
After dozens of workers in Santa Maria, CA went on strike at Rancho Laguna Farms, a supplier of strawberries to Driscoll’s, on May 5th for fair pay and better treatment, workers were fired and had the sheriff called on them. 75 workers from Rancho Laguna Farms have now signed a petition urging Driscoll’s to address the mistreatment of workers at their supplier.
Please consider joining in solidarity with those brave workers to call on Driscoll’s to ensure Rancho Laguna Farms provides fair pay, safe working conditions, and an end to retaliation against employees who speak up. The petition can be found and submitted on the The Action Network.

Texting/Postcards/Phoning

The Dems of Rossmoor Texters in Walnut Creek, CA. offer one-on-one remote training to Get Out the Vote in key states. This group of activists claims to be the largest Dem club in the country with 1,100 paid members. Since 2018 they have sent out over 14 million texts without using personal phones, since the texting is all computer-based. Sign up at CADEMs Events.
More locally, join a Virtual House Party with SwingLeft SB partnering with the Sierra Club in a texting bank to contact voters in “Super States” to encourage GOTV efforts. Hosted in Santa Barbara, but available from anywhere Sat. June 20th, starting 10 a.m. on your own computer.
Many other virtual events of various sorts are listed for consideration here.
For people with political passion and a need to stay safely sheltered, Grassroots Democrats HQ offers a very centralized method for volunteers to lend a hand through writing postcards from home to support a variety of campaigns across California and crucial Senate races nationwide. They provide lists of Democratic voters and appropriate scripts for specific races at various times. (The DSC will soon be able to provide blank postcards for this sort of volunteer engagement. Stay in touch for further details.)
